Besides Harry Potter, Twilight was THE series that got me hooked on YA. I loved it. There were parts that I didn't love, but for the most part, I will never forget Edward and Bella. When I first watched Twilight, I thought it was just a tad bit cheese-y, but then it grew on me... a lot! The rest of the movies have gotten better and better as they have come out! I have been highly anticipating Breaking Dawn because there were several scenes that I was dying to know how they would create them in the movies!
It's getting closer! And I'm stoked!
Here are 2 sneak peaks of what's to come!!!
And let me just say... I had chills the WHOLE time I watched both of these!

Shanghai Girls by Lisa See

For an instant I'm thrown back in time to our kitchen in Shanghai when Cook tried to teach us how to make dumplings. It had started out as something fun for May and me to do and had ended in a terrible fight.

Book - The Legacy of Kilkenny (Book 1)
Author - Devyn Dawson
Pages -
Published - June 11, 2011
Where to find Devyn - FB, Twitter, Smashwords, B&N, Amazon, Her Blog

Author Overview - Ireland has many secrets... this is one of them.

After an incredibly boring summer, Abel Casey was looking forward to his junior year at Piedsville High School in his little town outside of Oklahoma City. But once he sees Pru Phelan, the gorgeous girl with the shiny red hair and piercing grey eyes he knows he is in for trouble. Abel’s boring little life is about to come to an end if Pru has her way. The stunning Pru has a secret to share with Abe, one that will change his life forever. Up until recently werewolf packs have been looking for the Great Wolf, a wolf of legend handed down over hundreds of years from Kilkenny Ireland. Her secret is she is a werewolf, and her secret is now his too. Abel learns that all the tales of werewolves and vampires is real and he is the wolf they have been searching for. To protect his destiny and his family the pack begins training him for his first shift, without a hold on to his humanity can cause him to shift to a werewolf and never return to his human form.

Abel is torn between the family he has grown up with and the pack that claims he is the one of Celtic lore. Pru’s mentor and bodyguard Oakley is the one that her heart craves but she fears he has feelings for her friend Josie. Pru’s father the alpha wants her to stay focused on her assignment and forbids the two from becoming lovers and he threatens to remove Oakley from the pack if Pru can’t stay focused. Everything is going as planned until Abel’s sassy and moody sister Allie starts hanging out with an aggravating vampire Arien. Arien knows the pack’s secret and plans to expose them if he doesn’t get his way. This story of friendship, family, love and betrayal will leave the reader breathless and someone dead.

The Legacy of Kilkenny an incredible journey for these young adults. The reader will be drawn into this romantic yet invigorating story of friends and lovers. The prophecy has been stated, now it will be lived.

My review - I was hooked from the start when I read The Legacy of Kilkenny (TLOK). Most teenagers think that they have a lot on their plate during high school, they haven't met Abel Casey yet. TLOK is written in both Abel and Pru's point of view which I felt gave it an extra edge. I couldn't wait to get to the next chapter to see what the other person was going to talk about. Even at the point of completing the book I wanted more, more, more! Devyn definitely left the book open to build off of in her series. I loved the characters so much, I don't think I could pick a favorite... although what is not to love about Oakley! It was so fun to learn about Abel from the beginning pages and watch him grow into a strong and confident person by the end. He has a lot of grown up decisions to make that will affect the rest of his life, as well as the lives of those around him. There was drama, evilness, sadness, comedy and love... and you can feel all those emotions pouring out of this book.

Author Interview - Devyn Dawson

|

Thursday, July 14, 2011

My first interview opportunity was with a new author (and very dear friend of mine) Devyn Dawson. I'll be posting a review of her new book, The Legacy of Kilkenny, soon.

What inspired you to write The Legacy of Kilkenny?  I miss my family and friends in Oklahoma so much that I made up an imaginary group to keep me company.

What made you decide to go Indie?  I did query agents and I got the same response, marketing another werewolf book would be hard.  I had heard from authors how the title you give your book would change and how you have no say so about the cover.  I heard about books where entire portions of the plot had been cut out and how they made them change character names.  I know that teens are hungry for more supernatural books and characters that they can love and hate so I decided I’d take control and do it myself.  Maybe I’ll query agents again with the middle school book series I’m writing but not for my young adult books.  I like being in control.

Did you start with a character? A character’s name? A title? A theme? A plot?   I started with characters and I knew they’d be werewolves, and the plot just came to me.   I didn’t even have a title until the very end.

After that point, did the rest just fall into place or did it take a while?  The storyline did fall in place.  I hear stories about people writing on a manuscript for years and I totally get it, the tweaking can drive a person crazy.  Once I started to write and actually put in the 3000 words a day the process lasted less than a year.

Who is your favorite character to write?  I’d have to say I totally enjoyed writing Arien, he is so naughty and cocky.  Every time I wrote a scene with him in it, I laughed out loud.

How did you know that you wanted to be a writer?  I’ve always wanted to write.  When I was a teenager I worked for a company that did the data input of books for a publisher, I knew one day someone would be doing that for me.  I’m still doing the input but they are my words now.

How do you juggle the transition of a busy life and being an author?  Not very well.  I have no idea how the young writer’s with small children find time to write.  With the social media platform and trying to keep up with what is going on in the writing realm it is difficult having a life.  My husband has definitely become a writer’s widow.  I try to shut the laptop off from 6 - 9 every day.  Try is the keyword and coffee is the secret.

What advice would you give aspiring authors?  I’m still aspiring, so I feel strange giving advice but I’d have to say to stay focused.  Never give up and keep good people around you even if they are just the characters in your head.

What book (or books) do you love so much that you would read it over and over again?  I absolutely adore Harry Potter and can read all of those books over and over for the rest of my life.
